His father, <a class="css-yywogo" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/14/world/africa/mahmood-mamdani-gaza-war-book.html" title="">Mahmood Mamdani</a>, is a leading scholar of anticolonialism. His mother, <a class="css-yywogo" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/28/opinion/zohran-mamdani-mother-movie.html" title="">Mira Nair,</a> is an award-winning filmmaker <a class="css-yywogo" href="https://www.nytimes.com/1992/02/02/movies/film-one-people-in-two-worlds.html" title="">whose movies have examined the colonial experience</a>.
