title="Sydney"><span>Sydney</span></a><span> are growing faster than the infrastructure, with school children being forced to learn in temporary classrooms in demountable buildings.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>The portable dwellings have been built for short-term use, but a freedom of information investigation by 9News has revealed hundreds of schools have been forced to use them for decades.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 Baulkham Hills North Public School are demountables, which is well above the state average of 10 per cent.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>"We've had generations of kids having been through this school having been in demountables almost their entire schooling life," parent Benjamin Balk said.</span></div></div><div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Three more were added recently after the school was promised permanent classrooms to take on another special learning unit, but the funding was pulled.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>"It's disappeared, and we have more demountables than we had 12 months ago," parent Clint Harding said.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Built for 509 students, there are now 916 students with no major upgrades to the school.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>"Our staff room is half the size it should be, our library is half the size it should be, toilet blocks are half the size, our school is almost 60 years (old), which means the toilets are almost 60 years (old)," parent Alison Mackey said.</span></div></div><div investigation has uncovered there are 267 schools across Greater Sydney using temporary classrooms more than a decade old.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>With a total of 4899 demountables in use across the state, 87 are at Carlingford West Public School, and 61 are at Northbourne Public and Riverbank Public School, while The Ponds High School has 57.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Before they were elected, the now-premier Chris Minns was highly critical of demountable classrooms, yet almost 650 have been built under his government's watch since March 2023.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>"There are not the same number of projects that are being rolled out by the government," shadow education minister Sarah Mitchell said.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>"Our last budget had 23 new and upgraded school projects, this one only has 15, many of them are re-announcements."</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Acting Education Minister Courtney Houssos said the schools can't be built overnight.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>"We have got an ambitious program of building the schools where our families need them
