submitted a proposal to automatically register men nationwide rather than asking them to do so themselves within 30 days of turning 18. </span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div goULFa"><span>Under the recent law, mandatory registration will apply to all men between 18 and 26, including non-US citizens with a green card, refugee, asylum seeker and undocumented status.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Those on non-immigrant visas are exempt. </span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Most eligible men are currently already required to register for the selective service, with automatic registration in place in 46 of the country's 55 states and territories.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Some areas automatically register men when they apply for a driver's license or another form of official identification.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Failure to register for the selective service can result in the loss of benefits, such as student loans or federal jobs.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>It is also considered a crime and can lead to a fine of up to $250,000 or five years' imprisonment, although these are rarely applied.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div goULFa"><span>Supporters of nationwide automatic registration say it would save the US government millions of dollars each year.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>"Making registration automatic, not only saves taxpayer dollars by eliminating the need to advertise but finally ensures that young men are not unknowingly penalised," Democratic Representative Chrissy Houlahan told CNN.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>The last time the US enacted a military draft was during the Vietnam War in 1973 and about 1.9 million people were enlisted.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>For registered men to be called on to serve, Congress has to approve a draft in a time of national emergency.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Then, there would be a lottery where registered men are randomly chosen to enlist.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div
