and cloud cover is driving extreme heat over much of northern NSW. </span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>The system caused unusually class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Gunnedah broke a near seven-year record after the temperature reached 26.9 degrees, and Murrurundi broke a near six-year record after reaching 24.8 degrees.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Several other towns recorded their hottest night in almost two years, including Walgett with 29.1 degrees, Narrabri with 28.6 degrees, Coonamble with 28.2 degrees and Dubbo with 25.8 degrees.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Sydney also stayed around 28 degrees overnight and reached a peak of 29 degrees about 5am. </span></div></div><div><div class="OUTBRAIN" data-reactroot="" respectively.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>The unusually warm temperatures are due to a hot air mass and a slow-moving trough, which worked together to prevent the mercury from cooling into the evening and night. </span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>It comes as the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe to extreme heatwave warning for much of the northern and eastern parts of the state from today until tomorrow.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>The heatwave is also stretching up to south-east Queensland, the Darling Downs and Granite Belt.</span></div></div><div under an extreme heatwave warning, while Northern Rivers, Hunter, Northern Tablelands, Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains and Central West Slopes and Plains are under a severe warning.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Daytime temperatures are expected to soar to the mid-30s to low-40s, with overnight temperatures to remain warm about mid-20s.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>In Sydney, temperatures reached 31 degrees today and are forecast to hit 30 tomorrow.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Hunter Hill felt similar temperatures today and is expected to reach 32 degrees tomorrow, while Port Macquarie recorded 29 degrees today and will feel the same tomorrow.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>There is high fire danger for the Central Ranges today and greater Sydney, Illawarra and Shoalhaven, greater Hunter, Northern Slopes, North Western, Upper Central West Plains, Lower Central West Plains, Central Ranges, Southern Ranges, Southern Slopes, Monaro Alpine, Eastern Riverina and Southern Riverina tomorrow.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Meanwhile, Brisbane reached 34 degrees today and will hit 33 degrees tomorrow.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Further inland in towns like Chinchilla, the mercury is expected to tip into the low
