"This is a city that has great bones, that is doing great things. But is crime a problem? Absolutely. And does it need to be brought under control? Whilst they aren't recognised law enforcement, Campbell said they will have powers to deter crime straight away.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>"They've got the ability to make arrests, they've got the ability to manage hostile situations," Campbell said, "[They are] people who will be a visible presence on the street to deter crime."</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>Leader of the Nationals at the Federal level David Littleproud claimed the council's measures are an indictment on the state's Labor government's inability to control the crime in Melbourne and Victoria.</span></div></div><div class="block-content"><div class="styles__Container-sc-1ylecsg-0 goULFa"><span>"It's sad that they have to employ effectively their own police," he told Today.
